Changing your email address

Postby Draper » Mon Aug 08, 2005 9:44 am

Quite simply, you cannot do it on your own. If you attempt to change your email address for your account here, you will essentially be locked out of your account. This has always been the case here, and it is nothing new. The reason why phpBB does this is because we require a valid email address to register, but if you could change it at will, someone might add in an invalid address. Theoretically you could be sent a new activation email but this doesn't seem to work.

The bottom line is that if you want to change your address ask an administrator (either myself or Bill aka Dude in this instance).

Are you sure?

Because I've done it without Administrative assistance.

I have had about 20 people contact me in the last few months that they were locked out of their accounts.

Did you guys get a new activation email sent to you that allowed you to re-activate your accounts? If so, it is because our activation emails seem to work sometimes, but more often than not, don't.

I did it a couple months ago. I don't think I got an email, but I can't remember for sure.

I did get an e-mail.

Did they check their Spam folders?

Sometimes stuff gets stuck in there.

I don't think it is only the Spam filter, but that might be contributing to the problem. Based on the number of complaints I had been getting, I am surprised that as many activation emails have been getting through as seems to be the case. As I had said, we had been having actual problems with the activation emails for a little while.

Away, disregard this warning then as it will only apply to those who cannot receive the activation email, which doesn't seem to be the majority.

If I were to change my yahoo address to a BOL address, would my yahoo close down? I don't think I really understand this....

No, if you try to change the address you registered on BOL with, your BOL account might not work anymore.

If you changed your email to a different address, nothing would close down. If you do change your email address let someone from the staff know, so that we can be sure the account doesn't get deactivated. :)

All I meant is that if you want to change your profile on Boredonline to display a different email address than the one you registered with, it is usually best to ask a moderator to do it because it sometimes happens that your account will be deactivated if you try to change it yourself.
