Concerning the BOL IRC Chat

If you have tried to get into the BOL chat room, you know that it has been set to invite only. At the very least, you know that you cannot get into the chat. It is unfortunate that things have come to this, but I wish to explain to everyone (even the members who haven't graced the chat with their presence) what is going on.

Due to recent security problems with the IRC chat (#seton), we have been forced to shut it down, indefinitely. You see, #seton is one of many chat rooms on its current server, a server that isn't owned, nor affiliated with BOL.

In the beginning, it was our hope that we could keep the chat a safe place for our members. That was the reason for all the rules, for appointing the operators, and for enforcing those rules with a warn, kick, and ban list system.

Our efforts have seemingly fallen short of our previous expectations, and the chat has become a gateway for members to find themselves in a troubling spot. There is no way for us to keep any of our members inside #seton while it is on it's current server; and it is also almost impossible for us to keep other, non-member users out of #seton. Therefore it poses a direct risk to all of our members.

Please know that this action is being taken for the safety of you, our members, and that if you try to get into the chat and cannot, it isn't because you did anything wrong.

It is very unfortunate, and I, personally, hate to see it go, but thanks to all the ops and everyone who has helped keep the chat going for so long. It's been fun.

no, at the moment, we are still pondering the future of an official BOL chat. It will take time, but we will see what can be worked out. For now, there is no official or BOL endorsed chat.

Then why doesn't BOL get it's own chat room, that is affilliated with BOL?

Izod, quite frankly it doesn't matter if you "get it" or not and we're not about to teach you everything about IRC networks.
All you need to know is that it was shut down until further notice.

Izod, know that Mirra did not reach this decision without putting much thought into all the questions you asked, and she did in fact consider them all before she made such a huge decision. Trust her on this one, hm?
