The New and Improved BOL Chat

I have been trying to get Tony to fix the link to the chat, but I don't want to wait on our good news any longer. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the chat ops, we now have a new BOL chat. I will let one of them explain the specifics.

Technical note:

This is the letter which was written to the admin to explain the chat:

To whom it may concern:

Several of the ops from the chatroom have decided we would like to see the chat open on BOL again. It was previously expressed that there was a concern for the security of the members. There was no way to keep members from going to different channels which could put them into a bad situation, and people from other channels could find their way to the BOL chatroom. This was a legitimate worry, and we fully agree with the decision to close the chat under the circumstances. However, we have come up with a way to eliminate that risk.
Four of the ops have split the cost to buy our own IRC server. 50 users may be on the server at a time. This capacity is much greater than the average number of BOLers usually on at once. There would be no risk of members leaving the BOL chat and entering other channels as no other channels would or could exist on the server.
When the chat was open before, there were many times when there was no op available to monitor the channel. Because of this there was no way to be sure that the rules were being followed. The ops have discussed this and have come up with hours during which we can be sure that at least one op would be available. The chat will be open from 11 AM - 10 PM EST. At all other times it will be inaccesible. Also, these times will be subject to change dependent upon the schedules of the ops. If no op is available, the chat will be closed.
The server would be hosted on one of our computers. All we need is the permission of BOL and for the link to the server to be activated. Please let us know if our idea is acceptable.

The ops have discussed this and have come up with hours during which we can be sure that at least one op would be available. The chat will be open from 11 AM - 10 PM EST. At all other times it will be inaccesible. Also, these times will be subject to change dependent upon the schedules of the ops. If no op is available, the chat will be closed.

Why not just moderate the channel?
No vops means no one can speak.
And since only an Op can change the mode...?

Yeah, but then there would be a channel full of people who can't talk, and when an op came, he/she would have to voice however many people there was. It's just easier to have it closed entirely, also for the fact that people might not realize that it's moderated and can't talk unless they're voiced.

trust me, when i say... we have gone over every available option there is for every problem we had. This is what they came up with and it's a perfect fit for BOL, I think. I truly hope it works out without a hitch.
